The Best Event in the World

The Best Event in the “World”

By: Kelly Moore

To think of an appropriate adjective to describe this event is unfair. So many come to mind; entertaining, unbelievable, mind-blowing and these still don’t give an accurate description. All the excitement, the lights, cameras and action was more than this girl could have expected. If you haven’t figured out what I’m referring to it’s the 2009 USASF World Championships!

Just walking around Disney’s Milk-House and Jostens Center, I could feel the energy in the air. This is what these athletes, coaches and everyone involved in the cheerleading community have been waiting for because this was the best of the best and they all came to win. I have seen a lot of talented athletes in my day, but this was something I have never seen before. Maybe it is because I have never been to worlds before, but I think it was actually because of what Worlds stands for. Now don’t get me wrong, the amazing tumbling, stunting, baskets and choreography definitely grabbed attention and wouldn’t let it go; however it was the concept that athletes from all over the WORLD, not just the east coast or the west coast, could all gather together and share this amazing talent that have an undying love and passion for. Where else can you find thousands of people from various age and ethnic groups brought to their feet, screaming and chanting ”BANGKOK” in full admiration for what they have just performed? Shy of the Olympics? Nowhere!

That is what this event is all about; athletes showing their talents and getting truly respected for perfecting their skill. Let’s be honest, we all know how many hours go into becoming the best of the best and putting on a 2 minute and 30 second routine that will score high enough to be considered the best in the world but there is so much more that goes into this event then someone can imagine, and it wasn’t until I got a behind the scenes peek of this incredibly captivating industry that I began to realize just what it takes to create an event of this magnitude.

I was fortunate enough to meet many of the coaches, judges, choreographers, music mixers and vendors and to hear them talk about all the many tasks they had to perform to get their teams ready for this competition was baffling! These professionals put their hearts and souls into preparing these athletes for the greatest experience of their lives. And it was so heart-warming to hear them talk about their passion for the sport. This was just more proof that Worlds is in-fact, one of the best events to be a part of. It takes a combination of athletes, coaches, cheerleading professionals and of course families to pull this event off; so it’s not just about who is the most talented but it truly is about who is the most passionate. That is why I have a new found respect for this competition.

If you ever have a chance to attend this event, even if you are not participating, I would recommend it 100%. You will not only be entertained by the best athletes on the globe, but you will also have a chance to meet key players in the cheerleading industry and learn cheerleading views from other countries and cultures. Every team has a story and every athlete has had to give up something in their lifetime, and to see countries like Thailand, Jamaica, or New Zealand save money for two years just to travel to this competition should show you how great of an experience this is. I truly hope I get another chance to attend this eye-opening event and see you there!
